Lettuce - Romaine

Romaine is one very popular variety out of the many varieties of lettuce.  Its popularity in the US can be attributed largely to the fact that it is the primary ingredient in Ceasar salads.

Romaine lettuce is an excellent source of vitamins A, C, and particularily K.  It is also an excellent source of folate (B9), manganese, and chromium.

As with other lettuces, it is also a great source of dietary fiber, which helps maintains digestive system health if eaten in the proper amounts.
Storage tips:

Romaine and leaf lettuces should be washed and thouroughly dried before being stored in the refrigerator to maintain freshness as long as possible.  It is critical that as much moisture as possible be removed from the leaves before storing, as any excess water can speed the wilting process.  A salad spinner and pat down with dry paper towels is recommended.

A damp paper towel can be wrapped around the lettuce before storing in the crisper, to maintain a humid but not wet environment.
